FINANCE VACANCY: Investment Accountant
Role Overview

The position of Investment Accountant is responsible for the day to day accounting of the investment program and will provide support to the Investment Accounting Manager and Senior Investment Accountant as directed.

Principal Responsibilities

Principal responsibilities will involve:

    Assist in the detailed analysis/review of all private market investments including:

- monitoring of reporting deliverables as per legal agreements

- review of valuation information to ensure consistency with Fund policies

- capital call and distribution accounting/reconciliation

- review of quarterly and annual financial statements to identify any accounting issues in underlying portfolio investments

- review of annual management fee reconciliations provided by the managers/general partners

- maintenance of due diligence cost information and liaison with performance reporting to ensure all costs are allocated to the appropriate investment program

- review of any other accounting information received

    Assist in the development of reporting from the private markets database system to assist in monthly/annual reporting
    Assistance in the review of public market information including:

- Review of valuation information and manager/custodian reconciliations to identify and escalate valuation or position differences

- Review of any outstanding tax reclaims for reasonableness and ensure custodian is actively chasing claims

- Review of derivative balances and custodian reporting of derivatives to ensure accuracy, including reconciliation to clearing house reports where relevant

    Assist in the preparation of benchmarking surveys on investment program returns and costs
    Assist in the investment accounting process for the Board entity and all subsidiary entities and the Nation-building Funds including accuracy and timeliness of information reported to management and the Board(s)
    Assist in the preparation of monthly Board reporting
    Assist in the preparation of yearly financial statements, including year end planning meetings with the custodian and auditors to ensure timely and accurate delivery of required reporting
    Process improvements in relation to the provision of information from the Custodian;
    Review of ABS returns
    Ad hoc government reporting requirements
    Reviewing and posting receipts and payments to appropriate ledgers, spreadsheets, records, and databases
    Reconciliation of general ledger accounts to supporting records
    Monthly and annual closings for the Board entity and all subsidiary entities and the Nation-building Funds
    Preparation of GST returns

Experience

    Exposure to accounting for all investment classes including equities, fixed income, alternative classes (real estate, private equity, infrastructure funds, timber and commodities) and exchange traded and OTC derivative instruments
    Preparation of complex investment financial statements
    Exposure to complex investment transactions (accounting due diligence)
    Technically proficient (knowledge of accounting standards)
    Experience with custodian accounting systems

Qualifications and Experience

    CA/CPA qualified;
    Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Accounting;
    Further studies in the financial services/investment sector highly regarded

Senior Analyst, Equity

Role Overview

The Senior Investment Analyst will significantly contribute to the development of the listed equities portfolio, both through providing analysis for the strategy of the listed equities portfolio and through undertaking in-depth research into managers and products within the broad listed equities investment field.

The Future Fund is building an active management program through a stable of external investment managers.  A range of approaches and asset classes are anticipated within the funds’ active risk budgets, including the full range of equities strategies, hedge fund strategies and other niche strategies.

It is expected that the Senior Investment Analyst will work closely with the other specialist units to promote the generation of value across the entire fund.

As well as being integral in the manager selection and monitoring program, the equities team is expected to leverage the insights from our external partners to contribute to the broader strategic portfolio construction process. 

Principal Responsibilities

This particular role has primary responsibility for the following deliverables:

    Provide input into the development and construction of the total equities portfolio as well as the total Fund portfolio, including:
        building tools and processes to enable the monitoring of trends and developments in listed equity markets, and analysing their impact on the Fund;
        communicate views on the current investment environment for listed equities to the broader team;
        conduct research into new areas and test current positioning of the listed equities portfolio.
    Implementation and management of listed equities portfolio, including:
        prioritise and oversee screening of potential opportunities;
        contribute to the due diligence and manage the end-to-end implementation of investment in / divestment from managers. This includes working with the Operations, Legal and Finance internal teams;
        select and negotiate arrangements with managers and other service providers;
        monitor the day-to-day management of existing listed equities investments including portfolio and performance analysis and reporting.
    Establish, build and maintain long-term relationships with potential managers and other key service providers.
    Build and manage the Fund’s external brand and reputation, including attendance at industry events and external presentations.

Qualifications and Experience

A suitably qualified and experienced professional who is:

    a dedicated individual with 5 - 7 years relevant experience, with hands on investment management experience within listed equities;
    likely to come from an investment manager, investment bank or large institutional fund;
    flexible and adaptable to cover any area of the listed equities market;
    experienced at building and managing relationships with investment professionals.

It is expected that the candidate has:

    a strong understanding of the universe of listed equities strategies and an interest in equity markets
    an understanding of investment risks across the breadth of capital markets, and an appreciation of “whole of fund” issues in portfolio construction
    a drive to develop deeper knowledge and a preparedness/inclination to “think outside the box”
    a self-aware and confident nature, able to make well reasoned and robust decisions in the absence of perfect information
    the ability to work within a dynamic team-based environment.
